PHP offers more clinical intensity than intensive outpatient (IOP) but doesn't require living at the facility, unlike inpatient or residential care. It's often described as a middle ground — enough structure and support to be meaningfully different from once-a-week counseling, without the full-time commitment of a residential stay.
Typical Schedule
PHP programs typically run 4 to 6 hours a day, several days a week, for roughly 2 to 6 weeks. Participants return home each evening, which means a stable, supportive living situation matters more for PHP than it does for inpatient care.
Who PHP Is Right For
PHP is commonly used as a step-down after inpatient or residential treatment — a way to maintain intensity while regaining more independence — or as a starting point for people whose situation doesn't require 24-hour supervision but who need more support than IOP or standard outpatient provides.
